چکیده

Recent advances in table-top, ultrahigh intensity lasers have led to significant renewed interest in the classic problem of Thomson scattering. An important current application of these scattering processes is the generation of ultrashort-pulse-duration x rays. In this tutorial, the classical theory of nonlinear Thomson scattering of an electron in an intense laser field is presented. It is found that the orbit, and therefore its nonlinear scattering spectra, depends on the amplitude and on the phase at which the electron sees the laser electric field. Novel, simple asymptotic expansions are obtained for the spectrum of radiation that is backscattered from a laser by a counter-propagating ~or co-propagating! electron. The solutions are presented in such a way that they explicitly show—at least in the single particle regime—the relative merit of using an intense laser and of an energetic electron beam in x-ray production. The close analogy with free electron laser/synchrotron source is indicated. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1565115#

Pulsed-laser nonlinear Thomson scattering for general scattering geometries.

In a recent paper it has been shown that single electron Thomson backscatter calculations can be performed including the effects of pulsed high intensity lasers. In this paper we present a more detailed treatment of the problem and present results for more general scattering geometries. In particular, we present new results for 90 degrees Thomson scattering. Such geometries have been increasing...

Direct observation of the two-plasmon-decay common plasma wave using ultraviolet Thomson scattering.

A 263-nm Thomson-scattering beam was used to directly probe two-plasmon-decay (TPD) excited electron plasma waves (EPWs) driven by between two and five 351-nm beams on the OMEGA Laser System. The amplitude of these waves was nearly independent of the number of drive beams at constant overlapped intensity, showing that the observed EPWs are common to the multiple beams. In an experimental config...

Thomson scattering from a three-component plasma.

A model for a three-component plasma consisting of two distinct ionic species and electrons is developed and applied to study x-ray Thomson scattering. Ions of a specific type are assumed to be identical and are treated in the average-atom approximation. Given the plasma temperature and density, the model predicts mass densities, effective ionic charges, and cell volumes for each ionic type, to...

X-ray radiation from nonlinear Thomson scattering of an intense femtosecond laser on relativistic electrons in a helium plasma.

We have generated x-ray radiation from the nonlinear Thomson scattering of a 30 fs/1.5 J laser beam on plasma electrons. A collimated x-ray radiation with a broad continuous spectrum peaked at 0.15 keV with a significant tail up to 2 keV has been observed. These characteristics are found to depend strongly on the laser strength parameter a(0). This radiative process is dominant for a(0) greater...
